UPDATE (3/13) - Thank you for the prayers! My sister and I spent the evening in the ER with my Mother. Her potassium levels were elevated, which can signal renal failure. But, she felt well and her EKG was fine. The doctor gave her an IV and medication to bring her potassium down. Fortunately, she was not admitted and we were able to go home late last night. My Mother was ready to go!
The ER physician noted her kidneys did show signs of wear and tear. But, at 79 years old, that is to be expected. We'll be following up with my Mother's primary care physician in the coming days to determine if she should be referred to a kidney specialist. I'm trying not to let worry overtake my thoughts. But, my concern is my Mother may be on the path towards dialysis.

Praying for God's wisdom and guidance during this time.

ReplyDeleteDear Heavenly Father, I ask that you comfort my friend during this time of upheaval in her life. I pray for health, for healing, and for compassionate health care providers. Lord I pray that you wrap my friend in your embrace to keep her calm and poised for her family's sake. In your name, Father. Amen.
ReplyDeleteMary Ellen, I am praying for your mother and your family. My family and I have recently shared the same experience. At one point my dad's kidneys were so bad that he was only steps away from dialysis. We found out that this was a result of hypertension left unchecked for a long time. Once the doctor's were able to prescribe two (2) medications that worked at lowering his blood pressure, his kidney levels started to improve. In addition, he is on a low-potassium, low-sodium diet. His kidney levels are not where they should be (yet) but we have seen significant improvement.
ReplyDeleteI believe I read in one of your earlier post about your mom having hypertension. I, of course, am not a doctor so I will not attempt to give you medical advice. I only would like to suggest that you ask her doctor whether a low-potassium, low-sodium diet might be necessary for her. This has helped my dad tremendously.
Sent a prayer up for your mother, and for you.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful news! I'm glad to hear that she's on her way to feeling much better.
ReplyDeleteI hope not. I hope the doctor's check other factor's that can contribute to high potassium levels.
